Castlerigg Stone Circle

Castlerigg is one of the best preserved stone circle in Cumbria, 38 stones stand within a amphitheatre of mountains. 

North is Skiddaw and Blencathara, to the south High Rigg and Helvellyn, to the west the Derwent Fells and to the east the Northern Pennines.

The stones are looked after by the National Trust, Castlerigg is one of the UK’s earliest stone circles, dating to the Neolithic around 3000BC. Of the 38 stones,  33 still stand, while a further 10 form a rectangular enclosure or sanctuary inside the ring, a feature unique to this site. It is a magical, aweinspiring place well worth a visit, it is near Keswick in the Lake District.
